“It's really easy in a predominantly white environment for us to get comfortable and feel like everything's okay, but in speaking with and listening to our historically marginalized students, there’s some work to do at PHS to make sure that every student feels welcome and safe,” Ridenour said. “And I really hope that our student body recognizes that this is an opportunity to learn and grow as a community and better ourselves and is open to that message of growth.”

“Our DECA chapter decided to make these boxes because during COVID-19 there was a lot of families that were impacted financially, especially like the last two years, there was a lot of just surviving off the basic needs and we believe that everybody deserves more than the basic necessities of life. We all deserve happiness, so we wanted to provide something more than the basic necessities,” Poulin said.

“Technically you're able to be a 2022 graduate until August of 2022,” Ravindranath said. “Obviously, we want, and we work all year long, to make sure and many students as possible get to meet that deadline and walk with their class but sometimes things happen. Whether it is a family emergency, a medical emergency, a mental health crisis or otherwise. Things happen.”

 “After they get done with this process, we move into technique practice,” Schultz said. “We do ballet training everyday followed by more technical training of whatever skills we are focusing on that week. Now that we are moving into competition season, we will also be teaching more of a routine every practice as well after we finish our technical training.”

Osborn said that more people needing lunches also means that Food Services need to order more food. The schools do not have the capacity for food storage now compared to pre-pandemic times. This has caused the snack line at PHS to be temporarily closed.

“Ten percent of Washington residents face some sort of food insecurity every single day and that’s a really big statistic if you think about it. So, ten out of every 100 people face food insecurity… 200 kids at our school face food insecurity. That’s why it’s so important because people can’t function if they don’t eat, so getting them the necessary food is really, really, important,” Mettler said.
