Open Mic Night was held Thursday, Dec. 4.
Organized by senior and choir member Lizzie Perkins, Open Mic Night served as a fundraiser for the Concert Choir’s field trip in the spring.
“[The fundraiser] is for concert choir to go to Victoria, Canada. We are going to go and sing up there and stay for a couple of nights,” Perkins said.
The event hosted talents ranging from singing and dancing, to stand-up comedy with students from PHS and other schools in the area who wanted to perform their skills.
Junior and choir member Josh Carlisle explains his reasoning for choosing to sing a solo for the event.
“I [signed up] for a lot of reasons, one I have been singing for a long time but I do not really sing solo in front of people so I thought it would be a good way to open up about that and what better way to start off doing that than with a bunch of people that I am close to and feel comfortable with,” Carlisle said.
Although singing was one of the more popularly displayed talents at Open Mic Night, sophomore Caleb Tolbert brought a different approach to the stage through his stand-up comedy act. Tolbert is no stranger to performing his act, he explains his preparation process.
“I pretty much do [stand-up] all the time, actually, whenever I know that an opportunity like this will come I will prepare some jokes and I will run it many times, I will record it on my iPod and then listen to it over and over and try to recite it, so I know exactly what I am going to say and when I am going to say it,” Tolbert said. “I would say about 60 percent of it is planned out and the rest is pretty much ad-libbed.”
There will be a second Open Mic Night in April for any students interested in participating in the show or simply enjoying.
