I am not particularly fond of today’s chart toppers. They are way too overplayed on radio stations everywhere and they get stuck in your head and bug you until you get another song stuck in your head.
When I first heard of the name Alessia Cara my first thought was: who is she? I thought was she was going to be just another discovered singer from the Internet. I was shocked I had never heard of her before.
Alessia Cara is a blooming new artist from a small town in Canada. Instead of going straight to college after graduating from high school, she took a gap year and devoted it to music. She was discovered by Def Jam after posting videos on YouTube. Her new album “Four Pink Walls” is gaining recognition everywhere. Here most recognized song “Here” which she co-wrote with Sebastian Kole is 47th on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The song tops “Honey, I’m Good” by Andy Grammer and “Same Old Love” by Selena Gomez.
Cara’s catchy upbeat songs captured my attention quickly. At the first listen, “Here” just seems like just another pop song. But when you listen to the lyrics they come together to create a message most artists do not touch on. She is someone who feels awkward at parties and would rather be somewhere else. I know a lot of people who are that way, including myself in certain situations.
Her young perspective gives a new spin on her music. She is very relatable, she knows what it is like to be a teenager. Her down-to-earth personality shines through in her music.
Her song “Seventeen” is about when she was younger she never used to listen to her parents and now that she is older she wishes she could stay seventeen. This really struck a chord with me. This one definitely my favorite song in the album. I liked how relatable it is to me personally. I certainly enjoy how all of her songs have deeper meanings, none of her songs are surface level songs.
Cara’s songs are unique. Her song “Four Pink Walls,” the song the album is named after, shows how she never imagined herself outside the pink walls of her bedroom. She dreamed of leaving that bedroom and a lot of people have big dreams they want to achieve.
I could not find any negatives to this amazing EP in my opinion has no flaws. I am excited to see what the ingenuous Alessia comes up with next. Her next album comes out late fall.
