The movie Patriot’s Day is hands-down a must see. It is based off of the real-life events of the Boston Bombing which happened April 15, 2013 during the annual Boston Marathon. Three people died from the bomb, hundreds got injured and a police officer was fatally shot. The movie was created to recognize the love and the people who came together during such a hard time.
The movie starts out with multiple families going about their own lives and talking about the marathon which they all will attend. Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg), who is a cop for the city, gets assigned to monitor the finish line of the marathon, where essentially the bombs will go off at. Also in the beginning we get a background look at the two bombers, played by Alex Wolff and Themo Melikidze, which I found interesting. All the events in the beginning are a little slow but they set the tone for the entire movie.
Once runners begin to reach the end of the marathon, two bombs go off near the finish line creating a roar of panic. After medics come and take care of the injured, an investigation takes place to try and find the suspects. The two bombers decide to leave the city to bomb New York but on the way, they end up shooting an officer and taking a hostage. This gives the police an idea of where they are and the potential danger sends the whole city of Boston on lockdown until the two men are in custody.
Although the movie was not too graphic or bloody, there were moments after the bombs went off, where bloody legs and arms were laying around on the road which made me feel uneasy.
I enjoyed how we got to follow the different families stories’. There was not a dull moment, I was always on my toes, wondering what was going to happen next, even though I knew from the real event. I also liked how the movie used real-life news and security footage. It kept reminding me that these events actually happened and are not just made up.
I highly recommend you go out and watch this movie. It will open your eyes and allow you to watch what happened to the innocent families who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. You also will see how the police quickly jump in to protect those who are injured and how they went to extreme measures, just to keep everyone safe.
