What happens in Westview stays in Westview…
Unless Westview doesn’t exist.
Episode 4 of the new Disney+ series WandaVision streamed Jan. 29. Questions were finally answered and even more were raised.
This review will contain some spoilers for this episode as well as previous episodes, so read at your own risk.
Last week, “Geraldine” (Teyonah Parris) was shot out of Westview by Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) after mentioning Ultron. This week, we turned back the clock a little. Geraldine is revealed to be Monica Rambeau of S.W.O.R.D., or Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division. She was sent to Westview to assist in a missing persons case, only to find out that the town of Westview, New Jersey doesn’t exist. After Monica is sucked into the anomaly, S.W.O.R.D. gathers a crack team of geeks, including Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings), who was a supporting character in the first Thor film.
This week definitely confirmed my premonition from two weeks ago that WandaVision was more than a sitcom through the decades as it took on a more typical Marvel show format. The strange anomalies from Episode 2 were finally explained, but it also raised more questions for me.
I was super excited to see Darcy make an appearance in this episode. While Marvel does have its fair share of strong females, not enough of them get the attention they deserve, and in some cases, are just shoehorned into the plot. In this story, the females seem to be driving the series; Wanda is the main focus, Monica seems to have a key role, having been in Westview and then coming back and Darcy is behind the scenes or on the front lines, depending on how you look at it, with her geeky awesomeness.
While this episode is supposed to be the “what’s happening in the real world” episode, the one thing I wish would have been different is if we got to see a bit more of Wanda. The show is called WandaVision so it felt like a slight to Wanda to not have her be more of the focus. On the flip side, it gave attention to other characters, which the show also needed.
Overall, this episode is a fitting installment to the series. After the brilliant cliffhanger ending left me wanting more, I can’t wait to see what’s next for Wanda and Vision as Darcy and S.W.O.R.D. continue to investigate.
