New “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” Disappoints Staffer

Published November 28, 2016

The cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” originally came out in September 1975 but was recently revived in October 2016.

Being a big Rocky fan, I was excited about the revival, however, I was thoroughly disappointed in the outcome.

The writers of the new movie changed so many different parts of the original that I loved so dearly.

The movie starts out with an actual person singing “Science Fiction-Double Feature” rather than just the big red lips singing the song. This confused me a great deal at first, seeing as the character did not actually play a role in the movie.

I would soon come to realize that this is because they were introducing the fact that the movie was being played before an “audience” and was being told as if it were being showed as the typical live show many have gone to before. I really enjoyed that part of the movie.

I felt like the added embellishments were unnecessary. The “Time Warp” was too much to handle. I could not figure out what I was looking at because there was so much going on all at once. The dance was much more complicated than it should have been.

I did not recognize the song that Frank-N-Furter was coming in. I did not like the way the song Sweet Transvestite sounded. It sounded too modern and strangely techno. It felt out of place in the whole movie. I did not know what was going on and it fazed me that Frank did not come in though an elevator like they originally did.

Do not get me wrong, I love Laverne Cox and she did an amazing job playing Frank. However I felt like Frank should have been played by a man. In my opinion that is the point of Frank. It is supposed to be obvious to the audience that Frank is a man playing a woman.

The other thing that I did not like was the whole scene with Eddie. In the original the character Eddie is in Frank’s freezer and then gets “defrosted” and they never explain why. But in the new movie Eddie bashed through a window. Does that then defeat the whole concept of Frank and Eddie’s fight? Eddie is supposed to be mad at Frank because he froze him in a freezer. That is why Columbia is so happy to see him in the old movie.

Also what was up with there being a band? Why was there a band everywhere the characters went it made no sense. This added nothing to the plot and/or character development. I thought it was completely unnecessary.

Overall, I sincerely thought they should not have redone “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The changes made were not good changes in my opinion. I would not recommend watching the new Rocky Horror. If you want to watch Rocky Horror watch the original it is so much better.
