Volleyball heads to Yakima in state playoff contest

One of two teams heading into the post season, the girls volleyball team plays at 9:45 a.m. Friday against Chiawana in the WIAA 4A State Playoff. Winners will then face either Auburn-Riverside or Monroe at 5:15 p.m.

Coach Tony Batinovich says this year there is not really a clear cut favorite heading into the tournament.

“In the past you could usually pick out a few outstanding teams, but this year it appears to be wide open,” Batinovich said. “Anyone could win it so I told [the team], ‘why not us.'”

Senior Vivianne Vindivich

Senior Vivianne Vindivich agrees, saying that this year more than any other year, the players can feel the connection they have.

“I think we have a good chance,” Vindivich said. “We all put in the hard work and the dedication. This year we are like sisters and I know we’ve said that before but this year you can really feel it.”

Working toward the playoffs, Batinovich says the team has been working on the basics and the skills that will help the most.

“We have made practice shorter, but expected the same intensity,” Batinovich said. “I also have been making sure to point out a lot of positive playing this week and not spend any time dwelling on the bad plays when they are made.”
