Last season the Mariners finished 90-72, they won the ALDS and unfortunately lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in game seven of the ALCS. This year the Mariners made some offseason moves. They elected to not sign back Eugenio Suarez, which was sad to many, but others thought it was for the better as he had a .189 average in the second half of the season with the M’s, he played great the whole year until he got to Seattle and unfortunately went into a slump for the rest of the year. The Mariners signed back first baseman Josh Naylor who was a big-time player for the M’s last year posting a .299 average with twenty homers and thirty stolen bases. Another good pickup for the Mariners was 2nd Baseman Brendan Donovan who had a .287 batting average and ten homers with three stolen bases. The mariners also decided not to bring back Jorge Polanco, which was unfortunate because of his playoff heroics and his big hot streaks, they did find a replacement by signing Brendan Donovan.
The Mariners have a great pitching staff with Starter Bryan Woo carrying the pitching with 198 strikeouts and a 2.94 ERA. The Mariners had a decent amount of pitching injuries last season with Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo, and Trent Thornton all missed time, Matt Brash missed the whole season due to a UCL injury. This season the Mariners have two prospects that have a chance to play at the big-league level, which being the number 9 prospect Colt Emerson who has high potential with a .364 average for the Tacoma Rainer’s last season. Also, pitcher number 21 prospect Kade Anderson who picked in the draft last season and has high potential showing off what he can do this spring training. The mariners will rely heavily on Catcher Cal Raleigh who broke many records for catchers he had sixty homers and he won Gold Glove and Silver slugger for the catcher position. Another player they will rely on is Julio Rodriguez Who had another 30-30 season and had a .267 batting average, and he finished top 10 for the MVP pole and made another all-star appearance. The mariners as a team had the third most home runs with 238. The M’s were also tied for third for the most stolen bases as a team with 161 stolen bases, their team batting average on the other hand was not top tier, the finished in 20th with a .244 batting average. The Mariners have a bright season ahead of them, if they can stay healthy, they should be playing some October baseball.
