Sugar cookies are one of my favorite cookies to make, especially with my family. These specific sugar cookies are my great grandma’s recipe and we make them every year during Christmas time. We use cookie cutters to cut out fun holiday shapes from the rolled out dough. Some of these cookie cutters belonged to my great grandma. After they are cut out and baked, it is a tradition to frost these cookies with homemade holiday colored icing and then add festive sprinkles. I have fond memories of making these cookies with my family and hope to continue this tradition with my own family someday.
Sugar Cookies
1 cup butter
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
3 cups flour
First, set out two sticks of butter to soften earlier in the day. When ready to make the cookies, preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Next, put the butter and powdered sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat with a hand mixer until fluffy. Then, add the eggs and vanilla and continue mixing. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt by hand with a spoon. Gradually add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture until well mixed. Roll 1/3 of the dough on a floured cutting board using a rolling pin. Then, use the cookie cutters to cut out fun holiday shapes. Put the cookies on a cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Let them cool thoroughly and then frost and decorate. Try not to eat too many, so you can save them for Christmas morning. Make sure and leave out a few for Santa with a class of milk.
